The Numbering System of the Hebrew letters is often called Gematria. It is at least 2,800 years old - and probably older. The first documented use of Gematria is from an Assyrian inscription dating to the 8th century BC, commissioned by Sargon II. In this inscription, Sargon II states: "the king built the wall of Khorsabad 16,283 cubits long to correspond with the numerical value of his name." Gematria has been used by Jewish scholars and teachers for thousands of years, causing some Bible readers to discredit the whole concept of Gematria, and dismissing the practice simply as Jewish "mysticism." However, not all uses of it are mystical, or even "evil".

In fact, even in the NT book of Revelation, most renowned scholars see a reference to Gematria in Chapter 13. This verse concerns the antichrist, and the "number of his name."
