The Metaphysical Causes Of Procrastination

To metaphysicians, everything has a meaning. The trick is, of course, finding out what that meaning is and then using that knowledge to help understand your own challenges.

Take procrastination, for example. What could be the possible metaphysical causes for procrastination?

After all, it's just putting something off. And we've all done that, haven't we? We've all given ourselves excellent reasons why we're doing it. Excuses like; 'It's too late to start that now', or, 'I'll wait until (something else) happens first, because then it will make more sense'. Even, 'It's just too big (or difficult, or would take too long, etc.) for now'.

And each of those excuses sounds really reasonable.

But metaphysics is about looking behind the apparent reality. It's about looking at the hidden, the underlying, the not consciously acknowledged to find the real reasons for things happening. In this case, of course, for not happening!

So what could be a metaphysical cause of procrastination? Obviously there is an energy of delay there. But why? Delaying what? Completion of something. Is that so bad? Obviously, your subconscious thinks so, otherwise it would be nudging you harder.

So, a delay could be to stop you achieving your goals. And maybe that is because you feel, at some level, you don't deserve them. Or, maybe it's because if you did achieve your goals, then your life would somehow change, and maybe you don't want it to. Perhaps the whole idea of change is unsettling and scary. That might go back to your childhood.

Or it could be because if you change you might simply become unhappy with the change and regret it but be unable to return things back to how they were.

There is an element of being stuck, but wanting to move forward. But the stuck part is stronger. So, what's so good about things being as they are? What would change if you completed the task?

In other words, the metaphysical approach requires a closer look at yourself instead of looking at the external world. To a metaphysician, the most important part of any situation is the internal, human one. Understand that, and the situation becomes resolvable..

By taking that approach, by trying to find out what it is that is going on inside you, you can often find the true reason. It just takes time, patience and a willingness to ask yourself some awkward questions!
