What is the difference between a clockwise swastika and a counter clockwise swastika?
The word Swastika is derived from the phonetic ancient script Su (good) + ASTI, = SUASTIKA, a finite existence-to be symbolised in the macro cosmic creation of the clockwise motion of our galaxy represented as the 'Vishu Chakra' on the right hand forefinger of Lord Vishnu. It is also seen on the palm of elephant god Ganesha, worshipped and evoked at the beginning of any auspicious work.
The clockwise suastika is seen in the Hopi civilization as the sun to symbolize progession of time and life in well being.
In Indus valley civilization suastika seals the clockwise suastika was a permit given to traders to set out from the city during the day.
The counter clockwise SWA (sanskrit-destrction by fire) + ASTI , the finite existence -to be is anti thesis to life. It is symbolic of evil, darkness, death, sacrifice to evoke the 'power & destruction' in Hindu tantric practices of the 'shakti' maniufestations.
In Indus valley civilization the counter wise Swastika seal was a permit for merchants to enter the city after sunset or in the darkness.
In Hinduism, the two symbols represent the two forms of the creator god Brahma: facing right (clockwise) to represents the evolution of the universe, facing left (counter-clockwise) to represent the *involution*/destruction of the universe in end time called 'Kalyug'.
The counter clockwise swastika ,symbolic of 'power & destruction' of 'shakti' is however erroneously used by modern neo pandits & considered extremely holy and auspicious . It is regularly misused to decorate items related to Hindu culture throughout the subcontinent of India, and even by NRI's .It can be seen on the sides of temples, religious scriptures, gift items, wedding cards and letterheads.
