The Ancient Ram Inn, in the village of Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire was built in 1145 on an ancient Pagan burial ground. This land sits on the intersection of 2 Ley Lines, areas that certain people believe contain significantly high spiritual energy. Using a map, these lines can be traced directly to England's most famous sacred site, Stonehenge. Legend has it that the energy from Stonehenge travels the Ley Lines to feed the property's paranormal power.
It has been called the most haunted house in Britain… though how exactly one might measure, rank or quantify such a thing is beyond me. Nevertheless, there are countless stories of ghostly sightings at The Ancient Ram Inn; and worse still are the tales of forceful interference, physical assault and even demonic rape at this little old Gloucestershire pub.
Paranormal researchers have described a history of murders on the premises – the burning of a resident witch, a former innkeeper’s daughter hanged in the attic, the bones of ritually murdered children buried under the floor – while the Rt. Rev. John Yates, former Bishop of Gloucester, is said to have called the Ancient Ram, “the most evil place I have ever had the misfortune to visit,” following a failed attempt at exorcism.
Even amongst supernatural investigators, the place has an unprecedented reputation. It lies on the crossing point of two ley lines, one of which runs direct from Stonehenge; other researchers have claimed the inn sits upon an ancient pagan burial ground. Locals will cross over the street, we’re told, rather than walk past the Ancient Ram at night.
The cast of supernatural entities sighted at the property is extensive. Now standing for almost 1,000 years, the building has seen its share of residents come and go – and some have left more abruptly than others. Orbs have been photographed around the stairs and the attic; a variety of lights and apparitions have appeared to terrified visitors; a plumber working on the building once claimed to have seen a Roman Centurion on horseback emerging from a wall; and the most aggressive manifestations have typically been reported around the notorious ‘Bishop’s Room.’
Some of the most alarming stories about the Ancient Ram, however, have focused on the proprietor himself. John Humphries, the building’s owner since 1968, tells of being dragged from his bed by violent entities – and raped, routinely, by the building’s resident succubus. - http://www.thebohemianblog.com/2015/07/the-ancient-ram-inn-a-visit-to-englands-most-haunted-house.html
The strange goings on include a blood-curdling child’s scream, ‘electrified’ wooden beams, and even the touch of an invisible force. Caroline Humphries, whose family has lived in the Ram Inn for nearly 50 years, said: “My father won’t go anywhere without his Bible.”
Ms Humphries, 51, said: “When I was a child, I was so scared of the house I used to sleep in a caravan outside. It was normal for us to see people running out of the house, screaming in terror. Once, I woke up and found a chest of drawers hovering over my bed - before it crashed down the staircase. People have told us they’ve seen a high priestess sitting in one of the bedrooms, objects move and spin, and we used to hear the ghosts of murdered children screaming and crying in one of the bedrooms. We put some children’s toys in the room for them to play with and they don’t cry as much anymore. The whole house is absolutely terrifying.”
Ms Humphries father, John, 85, was pulled from his bed by a spirit on the first night the family moved into the home - and after researching the history of the house, he was horrified to discover an ancient burial ground lay beneath. - http://www.dailymail.co.uk
According to John, the ‘Witches Room’ has a stain on the bed where a spectral cat urinates. The Bishop’s Room, the most haunted room, had such an effect that eight people who slept there had to be exorcised. Orbs can be seen throughout but are most prominent in the barn.
John Humphries has found evidence of Devil worship and ritual sacrifice too. He discovered the skeletal remains of children just under the staircase. Broken daggers were also found within the skeletons. Until this day, he claims to be haunted and attacked by various entities in the house on a regular basis. There have been many sightings of previous owners of the inn seen residing and sitting together with the patrons of today’s time.
