Practical metaphysics can help us answer some important questions about life.
Who are we? What is the nature of the Universe we live in? Why are we here?
These are the eternal questions asked only by humans throughout history.
How can we answer questions like these? Is it even possible for us to know or comprehend the answers? And why do we even care?
Let's begin with some of the reasons why we ask, and why we might care.
It is in our darkest moments when all hope is lost - and in those moments when we are overcome with the awe and wonders of life - that we tend to stop, become totally focused in the moment, and realize that there is something bigger, something unseen, something we can sense but cannot put our fingers upon, something alive and at work behind the scenes of our lives.
If we are in pain, we cry out for help. And in our joy, we say, "thank you!"
But who and what are we calling out to?
Anyone who has had these experiences, and managed to connect with the creative force, energy and intelligence of the Universe, would probably call "it" G-d. Or H'ashem. Or Allah. Or Brahman.
Others, who call out and do not find that connection, might become atheists. Some become scientists, trying to find answers in order or only in things that can be perceived by the human body.
But the human body is limited in its ability to perceive. Even if we create technology that can sense energies and forms that cannot be sensed directly with human organs, the resulting images and information must still be processed by our human senses and human brain.
What about those experiences we have when the brain has been altered, or when there is no brain activity at all? People who have awoken from comas, or were technically dead and then successfully revived, have reported being able to see, hear, and move around.
Obviously, we have some means of sensing reality beyond our five physical senses.
What can practical metaphysics tell us about who we really are, why we are here, and what the heck is this place we call home?
Who We Really Are -
We can all sense that undefinable center in ourselves that seems to never change. From our earliest childhood memory (or past life memory) to our final breath, that core essence of who we really are is always with us.
Some of us call that eternal essence the "soul". But a soul is something that can be created and destroyed. The eternal essence within us is never born, never dies. It is eternal.
The eternal essence within each one of us can never be seen, heard, tasted, or touched. No machine we can manufacture will ever be able to detect or measure "it". And yet, we know it is there. We "feel" it with a level of perception that bypasses the body and the brain. We "see" it when we look into the eyes of someone we love. We "hear" it when we become still or find ourselves lost and alone.
It is this eternal sense of being that we call out to when we are hopeless or in pain, or sing to with praises when our hearts are overflowing with gratitude and joy. "It" is who we really are.
Who we really are is the creative life force that is beyond words. It is the part of us that projects physical reality into our minds, and the part that perceives that reality with our bodies.
Who we really are creates the blueprint of our soul and projects the light of spirit through the soul into the mind to create life.
Time and space are the result of our desire to have a physical life experience. Who we really are is the observer, the creator, the One going along for the ride!
Why Are We Here?
Physical reality is our answer to the question, "What if?"
"What if it were possible to be separate?"
Separate from who we really our, separate from each other, separate from nature?
The answer to that question is that it's not possible to be separate. But what if it were possible? What would it be like?
The true nature of our physical reality and the illusion of separation will be our next subject. For now, let's look deeper into why we even asked that question!
Imagine your existence as being infinite, unlimited - infinite energy and information, infinite intelligence and possibilities. Everything that can be, existing simultaneously, all the "time".
Of course, there is no time, and it's impossible to imagine such an existence from our limited point of view. But try to imagine this; hidden within All That Is - is All That Is Not.
Just think about it. If all possibilities, and they are infinite, exist simultaneously, then the illusion of separation and the question, "What if?" must also exist. The question has always existed, and the answer to it must also exist.
As we move through this illusion, there are moments when we appear to be separate from everything. But that is purely a matter of perception. In those moments our core essence, who we really are, is perceiving the images and feelings created by the body and the brain. We are fully embracing the illusion of separation so we can experience what it is like.
The sanskrit word for "to know" means "to go through". In order to know what it would be like to be separate - if it were truly possible - we must create the illusion of separation in the mind and then enter into and fully experience that creation.
Because we are experiencing, have experienced, and always will be experiencing physical reality and the illusion of separation - we always "know" deep within is, at our core essence, that it is not possible to be separate.
Illusion of separation and our physical life experience falls into the infinite realm of "All That Is Not". Who we really are, and the awareness that everything is connected, exists in the infinite realm of "All That Is".
If we did not "know" or "go through" All That Is Not, we could not "know" All That Is.
And that is why we "asked" the question.
That is why we are here.
The True Nature of Reality -
So, here we are, creating the illusion of separation so we can have a physical life experience and answer the question, "What IF it were possible to be separate?"
If it WERE possible to be separate, we could be bodies, we could get married and have kids, eat, drink, be born and die, build things, destroy things, travel, make love, make war.
We know, deep down, that we are not separate. Everything is connected. And our physical life experience is an illusion. But is it?
It is NOT possible to be separate, and yet here we are - we do have bodies, make babies, love, and war. We build things, create things, destroy things, learn and discover new stuff every moment of every day. Even though time and space don't really exist - except in the mind.
Nothing unreal exists.
Who we really are, the light of spirit shining through the soul into the mind exists. The physical life experience created by our perceptions exists. It is all real, because it exists.
When we wake up and become aware of the true nature of reality, the question changes. It is no longer "What if we could be separate?" We already know everything is connected, or One.
The new question becomes, "How can we experience this illusion of separation, without BEING separate?"
At first, this might seem impossible. Doesn't the awareness of connection and oneness destroy the illusion of separation? Isn't that the end result we read about in The Disappearance of the Universe? Isn't that the purpose of A Course In Miracles? To overcome the illusion and leave it behind, forever?
Well yes, and no.
In truth, we are in constant contact with Source because it is who we really are. Some say we cannot face G-d and remain in these physical bodies. But we do it every day! It is who we really are.
And the illusion of separation is just a mind trick that we play on ourselves when we choose to perceive only with our physical senses.
Complete the full cycle of perception, by sending the 3D holographic images of the brain back to Source for completion, and we can continue to live in our bodies, eat, sleep, make love, learn, and grow - all in full awareness of who we really are, why we are here, and the true nature of the physical universe.
What if the purpose of physical life experience was not to transcend it, but to complete it?
What if we are here to open our real eyes, the ones that can see the light of spirit in all things? To experience what we sometimes call "Heaven on Earth"?
We have all had those moments when we are overcome by the magic of it all.
Even though we might not perceive the light of spirit with our physical eyes, hear it with our physical ears, or feel it with our physical senses, we "know" that it is there.
But as we develop our higher senses, the ones that send energy and information to our brains using the non-physical circuits that exist around and within our own bodies, we CAN and DO begin to experience images and feelings that might seem surreal, but feel more real than anything we might even imagine!
Whatever we want to call it - energy healing, spiritual enlightenment, or religious awakening - the shift in perception is real, and the life we experience from that point of view is also real - because it exists!
