How is reiki breaking the spiritual laws?
I used to be a devoted Vipassana meditator (as taught by S.N. Goenka), the teaching of the Buddha. Then, after years of devoted practice, I got an opportunity to go to a free reiki class that was taught by a reiki master friend that I had.
A couple of months later I applied for another Vipassana course, and on the application you have to mention if you did any other practice. So, unknowingly, I casually mentioned my reiki experience.
When it came to my interview, the guy ripped into me, in an entirely un-equinimous way. Claiming that I was bastardizing the laws of nature by not simply observing my sensation but trying to change the nature of it.
The way the person, who was representing the organization, approached me with it left a very negative impression on me, one that I couldn’t shake no matter how much meditation I did. Shortly after that, I basically stopped doing Vipassana meditation.
Later, when I spoke with an actual Assistant teacher of Vipassana, they confirmed that my interviewer’s reaction was extreme. However, they did emphasize how reiki, above all else, sought to change the nature of your experience as it seeks to alleviate pain or discomfort using energy instead of the observation of the sensation. A reiki master then replied that reiki just assists in the natural processes of the body, towards healing or death or whatever the energy is facilitating.
So, in the end, is reiki breaking spiritual laws? It depends on who you ask. But my opinion is that spiritual law doesn’t exist, it is a anthropomorphic structure that we create to feel that we are governed by a higher force. The only thing that does exist are “harder” and “easier” paths to self-realization.
In Vipassana, you are told to not lie, not because it harms others, but because it disturbs the balance of your mind. So, it is the same with many spiritual laws, your perception that you are breaking a law or committing and untruth is enough to do the greatest harm that can be done, which is self-harm by unbalancing the mind.

In my humble opinion, most things in life including alternative healing methods and practices are defined by the intention behind them. In these contemporary times nothing is free from attempts of corruption and it is up to all of us to use descernment and then follow the heart. - Heart, LFN member
