James Borg, author of Body Language: 7 Easy Lessons to Master the Silent Language, states that human communication consists of 93% body language and paralinguistic clues, while only 7% of communication consists of the words themselves. Other researchers consider the number to be much lower than 93%, somewhere between 50% to over 80% (Source: Wikipedia). Given that most communication online only consists of "the words themselves", consider the following:
What does this say about the nature of communication online?
What are the ramifications of more and more of our communication being conducted through electronics, computers, and screens as opposed to in person communication?
How are we to transcend these limitations of communication in the electronic/digital sphere?
What are the best ways to avoid misunderstandings when so much of the human commmunication mechanism are not being utilized in the online sphere?
