The Devils Dyke is a great cleft in the South Downs, south of the village Poynings in southern England. In purely scientific terms, the Devil’s Dyke is a V-shaped valley, going down to a depth of about 100m beneath the surrounding countryside. It is what is known as a dry valley, created after the last Ice Age, about 10000 years ago. The formation of the Devil’s Dyke was caused not by the advance or retreat of a glacier though, but was created by the movement of a huge amount of melted water. The geographical feature was made into a part of an Iron Age fort that allowed for views over the surrounding countryside, as well as providing a defensive ditch. Archeologically speaking, use of the dyke may date back around 40BC when the area was occupied by the Cauvellauni tribe ruled by King Cassivellaunus. The tribe was defeated by Julius Caesar in 54BC and there is speculation that the defeat was at this spot. Excavations in the 1970's suggest the area could have been originally settled by Belgae invaders.

Legend has it that the Devil himself dug the huge ditch when he thought the people of Sussex were too taken up with religion; the idea being that the sea would rush in and drown them all. Fortunately for the people of Sussex, however, he got only halfway with the task when an old woman lit a candle which set off a cock crowing. The Devil thought sunrise had come, and promptly fled. The Devil and his wife are said to be buried at the bottom of the Dyke. Legend has it that if you run backwards seven times around these humps, whilst holding your breath, the Devil will appear. Lore also says that not all the demons have disappeared, for there have been many sightings of a large black dog with fire in his eyes. He is said to run along Devil's Dyke, his blood-red eyes as big as saucers, guarding the dyke and, some also say, the treasure buried deep beneath it.

Perhaps, not surprisingly, the Devil’s Dyke has been the scene of mysterious events. Witchcraft, UFO sightings, strange presences, levitation, the loss of use of arms and legs. Not the sort of things you would associate with the gentle South Downs of Southern England.

Some tradition says that the strange lights often observed are linked with phantom legions of Roman soldiers who are said to march along the Devil’s Dyke, a Roman road lining the fort at Glossop with the Hope Valley in the east.

"Even on bright summer days there is an uncanny sense of some unseen presence which seems to follow you about. If you enter the dark wood you are conscious of something behind you. When you stop, it stops; when you go on it follows.” – Mark, http://travelblogbymark.blogspot.com

Similar to nearby Chanctonbury Ring, where an unmistakable tree trunk altar and five-pointed star made of stones (parchment bearing black candle wax found at each star point) all surrounded by a circle of stones have been found (Aleister Crowley, famous for occult involvement, thought the Ring was a ‘Place of Power.’). The remains of a similar circle have been seen at Devil’s Dyke. A black coven was known to have been practicing there until 1978. Grass has grown over everything but an outline can still be discerned. Also visible is what is thought to be a triangle of art used to invoke or materialize a spirit.

Chanctonbury Ring and the Devil’s Dyke are both connected by ley lines, four of which intersect at Cnanctonbury. What significance can be attached to this link between the sites? Does the produced energy attract the unexplained phenomena that has been witnessed there? Can the forces created affect human brains triggering phenomena in the mind of alleged observers?

UFO sightings described consistently as “bright orange” have been witnessed for years and continue to be reported from these and neighboring areas. Often the phenomena appears to disappear over the Dyke. The have been described as egg shaped, saucers, balls and discs.

… orange egg shaped object photographed leaving the sun at sunset I was taking photographs of the sunset from a place called Devil's Dyke which is an iron age hill fort 786ft above sea level. My camera was on zoom, I was taking photos with approx. 4 seconds between them. I have a photo of the object, clear as crystal...it is orange, egg shaped and perfectly smooth...it looks like it has just left the sun. It is not a balloon, water droplet on the lens, passing ball or frizbee. I would quite happily forward the photo of the object...and the photos I took before and after. To be honest, I would really like to know what it is. I am open minded to extraterrestrial existence, but I am also a skeptic, and this is not a hoax.
